Final info 4F

Melodies 395-410 are fair game for the final. It is only 15 melodies, and we'll cover some of them in class next week. On monday, we'll have the sign up sheet for individual times, which will take place on friday 5/5. It will consist of:

1 melody of your choice
1 melody of my choice
A couple (2-3) examples of the sing and play. You play both sop. and bas., and sing either alto or tenor.

On monday (5/1) in class will be the last dictation quiz, not technically part of your final grade, but will be worth 2 quizzes. We'll do one excerpt from a melody from the set (395-410), and a short harmonic dictation, most likely from a bach chorale :-)

4F homework

For Friday, please finish up the WTC example dictation and analysis. If you haven't been in class I still have your paper so come get it from me at some point, or get them on wednesday. This will be the last hw assignment, but we'll probably work on it in class.

Melodies for Wednesday

4C: 232-236

4F: 390-392

and for both, start working on the sing&play sheet I passed out last week

4C Final info

We've got 2 weeks left in the quarter, so we'll keep chugging away at
the melodies (we're almost done!). Your final will consist of three
things:

1) sight sing a melody at random from the last 3 pages of your reader
2) sight sing a melody of your choice from the last 3 pages of your reader
3) sing and play from the sheet I passed out last week

Like last quarter, I'll bring a schedule during Monday and Wednesday
of dead week for us to sign up for individual final times.

At this point I understand where each of you are at in terms of sight
reading, so what I'm really going to be looking for is PROGRESS. I
expect you all to be exceptionally better sight readers every quarter,
so the grading will partially be subjective. For those of you that
have not performed so well in class melodies, this is your chance to
show me that you can read and understand the melodies.

In terms of grading, I want to remind you that if you fail any portion
of music 4 (or music 5) that you must retake it the next year, in the
proper quarter it is offered, which puts you a year behind in
coursework. Check your quiz scores and if you would like to see where
you stand, I'll have my office hours on Friday if you need to see what
your grade is.

Also, we have one quiz left before the final, and it will be weighted
for two quizzes. If you have struggled this quarter with dictations,
I'm more than happy to meet with you outside and practice techniques
for hearing and understanding music. Its really hard with a class of
13 people to help each student with what they need, and one-on-one
time can be really helpful.

I hope Jordan's class went well. I think we need to brush up on the
Geographical Fugue for next year, so we can show off to the new
freshman class! Enjoy the rest of the long weekend... by looking at
melodies 232-236 for Wednesday :-)

Weekend homework

4C:
From your workbooks, chapter 14: example 1 (track 46) questions # 1,3,5,8, and 9. *note* please notate question 9 in 4/4 time, beginning on beat 3 of a measure.

For e.c. If you didn't do well (or just plain didn't do) the last assignment, do question #17, include the rhythm too, even the book says not too.

if you have questions I'll be happy to help you on monday. This will be due wednesday. I can't accept any more late assignments because it drives me insane :-)

4F:
Listen to prelude 1 from the well tempered clavier, book 1. (Find it in the library, or on naxos online library)

Notate the outer voices (the held bass and the highest pitch of the right hand) to measure 19 (before the arrival of [V]/IV).

In addition, supply roman numeral and figured bass from the example, by ear. We'll be discussing it on monday, but give it a shot. He does not modulate, but uses many applied dominants.

I'm always free to answer questions via email or in person.

This is going to be an ongoing project for the rest of the year, so it is imperative that assignments are done on time so we can discuss them in class. This first segment is due MONDAY 5/18. No exceptions.

Homework 4C.

Chapter 12, just do example 2 (mendelssohn Song wo Words) from the contextual listening. Do questions 1-9, and then 11 and 12. For extra credit try notating both the bass and the melody.

This will be due wednesday and I'll accept them on friday for partial credit.

4F for monday

Melodies: 378 and 379 in class tomorrow

Homework 4F

Take a look in your workbook to ex. 2 (track 2.4) from chapter 29. Listen and answer questions 4,6, and 7-12.

In addition to those questions, dictate the melody (top voice) and the bass line from segments 1 and 4, as explained in your workbook. If there are any questions about the "segments" let me know.

Answers are not in the library, so do your best at home and if you need extra help let me know. Since I'm posting this on sunday, you guys have till wednesday to comlete it. I'll accept late hw for partial credit on friday, but we'll be discussing it on wednesday.

Also if you need some extra credit do the next track, brahms string sextet, example 3, track 2.5, questions 3,5,6,8,9, and 12. This will count for one quiz or two absenses.

Re: interval quiz

If you received a grade 9/12 or below, I would strongly encourage students in BOTH classes to see me for office hours to review and practice hearing and identifying intervals.
